Raising Honey Bees in Your Backyard

Raising honey bees in your backyard can be adventurous and a sound investment.  Depending on the amount of shade, sun and drainage that you have in your back yard, you have to first decide how the soil will be prepared.  Then you have to decide what kind of crop you are going to plant and the harvest dates.

Next, a backyard beekeeper has to decide where to put the hive. The beehive must be screened from streets and neighbors.  Its place should be shady with plenty of space to work and low-maintenance landscape.  The hive should not be in a damp place.  So, construct a hive stand which has platform so as not to set it on ground.

Long grass in and around the hive should be cut so as not to block entrance of bees who fly in and out of hive.  Once the backyard beekeeper has made space for the hive stand, the next step is to place the hive.  The placement should be done keeping in mind flow of people as well as bees.

Personal gear of backyard beekeepers is an integral part of backyard beekeeping.  The most common color of the gear is white though any light-colored dress or uniform will suffice.  It is prudent to opt for full body suites so as to avoid bee sting.  There are many types of bee jackets available that come handy and are comfortable too.  One should not forget veil and hood which provide visibility as well as protect face from bee stings.
